Personal Self-Care

This section is particularly important to me as I believe it is the foundation on which I ground myself for being the best version of myself AND at the same time, the sustenance on which I continue to learn and grow.  Following the principles of HEARTcare, I take my own twist and model good self-care.

Workplace and relationships

We spend the bulk of our lives in the workplace culture, so we need to find the best fit.  I can say with certainty that I've always developed great relationships in the workplace and it has been perhaps the most rewarding aspect of my professional life.  It is extremely important to me to have a "best friend" at work because I feel supported, inspired, and can lean on them with a pride that they feel the same.

For instance, I have actively practiced engaging with my coworker at lunchtime during the practicum to debrief after the longer morning section, which gives me something to look forward to and makes the last part of the day so much more manageable.  The connections I will make with other teachers are particularly valuable as they will also understand the loneliness that often comes with being the only adult in the room for hours on end.

Advocacy and Identity

As a Strength & Conditioning Coach for 2 decades, I could tell too many stories of the importance of exercise and healthy living... but I noticed this first before my career began.  I noticed just how much more productive, positive, and confident I was when I put myself first.  I also realized the opposite when I would allow myself to become distracted.  Everyone should strive to balance the Yin & Yang of life, and I am no exception.

I have set aside time for myself to regularly exercise 4-7 days a week in different aspects of physical training.  I keep a flexible and periodized approach to my training, which cycles regularly.  I find the change in schedule from university to practicums, I have had to change the time at which it happens, but setting time aside in my calendar reminds me of my responsibility to myself.

Seeking expert help

As a professional in Health & Fitness, I understand the value of expert advice and services.  I know there are things that I can't do for myself.  The advice that stuck with me from my first degree in Business Administration is that everyone has strengths and weaknesses... "so, if you don't know what you're doing, hire someone who does".  I regularly attend therapy, counselling, and financial advising, and I receive feedback from other Health & Fitness professionals who provide insight and collaboration to help me become a better version of myself.
